Spring Cleaning Your Roof
It is finally that time again. When the weather gets warmer, we all begin to spend more time outside. We are all looking forward to it, especially after these last couple of weeks of harsh winter weather. Oklahoma just got more snow than we have seen in a long time, and temperatures are literally lower than Antarctica. So now that grass and trees are about to start turning green and the temperatures are rising, it is time for adventures and spring cleaning. Now, most people are going to start in their gardens and on their lawns, but a huge focus after the cold winter months should be spring cleaning your roof. And we are going to tell you how.
Start With Your Gutters
Now, hopefully, this is something you do seasonally, so it won’t take as long. However, after winter weather, including freezing rain and snow, let’s check them again. Be sure your gutters are clear of any debris, such as leaves, twigs, and sticks. And check the fasteners as well. The added weight of snow and ice can damage gutter alignment and cause sagging. Or even completely disconnect them. Make sure all downspouts are clear and flowing as well.
Check Out Your Shingles
Shingles can be damaged in the winter as well. If you notice any shingles missing, they need to be replaced immediately. Missing shingles can expose the roof decking and lead to leaks. Internal leaks lead to even bigger problems. Also, look for damaged shingles that may be cracked, blistered, buckled, or stained. Blistered shingles mean that you have poor ventilation, while stained shingles mean that you have a leak in other areas. If you are noticing any irregularities with your shingles, it is time to have an inspection done to identify the root cause of the problems.
Look For Mold
Excessive precipitation followed by warm weather leads to humid conditions. This is the breeding ground for mold, which can not only be damaging but also toxic. It goes without saying that addressing all of this early is going to be a lot better than letting the problem get worse with time.
